Best of Class and Double Gold for 2005 Karma Zin at 2009 San Francisco Chronicle Competition!
The 2005 Karma Zin has won a Double Gold and Best of Class (for Zins between $25-$35) at the January 2009 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. We also won a Gold for the 2006 Black Magic Late Harvest Zinfandel, and a ton of silvers.
2006 Zins get rave reviews from Connoisseur's Guide to CA Wines
A whopping three wines received 2 Puffs out of three possible (equates to a score of over 90pts.) and two received 1 puff---WOW! Thanks, guys!
As a pre-release sneak preview, we sent some of the 2006 Zins in to Connoisseur's Guide to CA Wines for review---below are the results from their January 2009 ZAP issue. Please note: the 2006 Rocky Reserve and 2006 Monga Zin will only be released to members of Carol's Bunch in the February 2009 shipment, and the 2006 Maple Zin and 2006 Wild Thing will be released in the May club shipment. Non-members will have to wait for a few more months for each of these wines to come out.
**93 CAROL SHELTON Zinfandel Maple Zin Maple Vineyards Old Vines Dry Creek Valley 2006 $33 (not yet released)
Our favorite wine of the very good lot of new Carol Shelton Zinfandels, the Maple Zin is a deep and wonderfully concentrated wine that shows off all of the blackberry and spice traits for which the varietal is prized. It is full-bodied and fleshy with a keen sense of balance and just the right complement of structural tannins, and, while it is so tasty as to tempt early drinking, it will not really come into its own for several years.
**92 CAROL SHELTON Zinfandel Rocky Reserve Florence Vineyard Rockpile 2006 $33 (not yet released)
Rich in ripe berries and decked out with plenty of sweet, slightly caramelly oak, this wide-open, immensely flavorful wine is easy to like right from the start, and its slightly softer stance only adds to its immediate appeal. That said, it shows no danger of fading away anytime soon, and its firm, finishing tannins provide the kind of structure to suggest that, while enjoyable now, it may not hit its best until another three or four years have passed.
** 91 CAROL SHELTON Zinfandel Bacchus Laureate Reserve Dry Creek Valley 2006 $52 (not yet released)
A touch less dramatic and just a little more tailored than most of its kin, this wine waits until the very last minute before letting its ample ripeness show through. Before then, it is a comparatively trim, carefully constructed and solidly varietal working whose focus is very much on berries and sweet spice, and, even though heating up a bit at the finish, it never gives up an iota of fruit.
* 88 CAROL SHELTON Zinfandel Wild Thing Cox Vineyard Old Vine Mendocino County 2006 $28 (not yet released)
Redolent of strawberry and raspberry jam in the nose and flirting with hints of milk chocolate throughout its length, this direct, slightly soft-centered wine may not be as deep as the best of its clan, but its affable manner and easy-to-drink style earn it commendation.
* 87 CAROL SHELTON Zinfandel Monga Zin Old Vine Lopez Vineyard Cucamonga Valley 2006 $21 (not yet released)
There is plenty of well-defined, if fairly ripe, fruit pushing this big wine along, and it is hard not to like its impressions of richness...we would suggest setting this in the cellar for another three to five years.
